At Mr. Ellie Pooh, perhaps our eco-friendliest shop, you’ll find a range of stationery and gifts on a mission, all made from a delicate combination of elephant dung and recycled paper, natural vegetable binding agents and salt-based dyes. We know what you’re wondering – don’t worry, since an elephant’s diet is all vegetarian and elephants have fairly inefficient digestive systems, most of the waste produced consists of raw cellulose. Thorough cleaning and processing transforms this cellulose into an acid-free, linen-like, papyrus-type paper that can be formed into a plethora of products that are as green as you can get. But that’s not the only reason why they’re great.
The Ellie Pooh program also has the elephants themselves in mind. In Sri Lanka, elephants are being killed at an alarming rate due to poachers and deforestation. Proceeds from sales of Mr. Ellie Pooh projects stimulate the local economies and encourage villagers to live among, work with and respect the elephant by taking advantage of the natural resources they provide – their dung!
