In 1857, Jean Neuhaus opened Belgium’s first pharmaceutical confectioners’ shop where he (amazingly) sold chocolates alongside common health remedies. In 1912, his grandson invented the Belgian praline -- a bite size filled chocolate bonbon. As the pralines gained in popularity, the family ditched the pharmaceutical business in favor of one much sweeter.
Now, 150 years later, Neuhaus is unquestionably one of the world’s finest chocolatiers. What is open for debate is whether their wide selection of bonbons, bars, and ballotin gift sets should once again be classified as medicinal. You can guess our view…hmmm, maybe our HMO will foot the bill for our next box? Maybe the 16 piece Sommelier Collection…?
